A book study via Facebook… #InnovatorsMindset #thefirstyear

January 10, 2016 by Amber 4 Comments

innovators mindset bookstudyWe have a collective leadership team on this campus that is undertaking a book study this semester. When looking at the hectic schedule that we already know is in place, we had to get creative in how we would undertake adding an additional to do.

First, I knew that I needed a book that would be timely and relevant to where we are in our journey as a campus. I wanted something that was easy to read, but something that could guide us from where we are to a more collaborative, innovative place. It would also be more beneficial if it impacted our practices from THEIR mindset shift, versus a top-down approach.

Second, there wasn’t a day or an hour that would have worked for multiple teachers on multiple grade levels. I’ve done a Twitter book study before but knew that I wanted deeper conversations.

Third, I’ve had some great conversations with my PLN about how I needed to be able to sustain the energy and focus that I have this first year moving forward. I have to be able to manage adding a book study. I needed a time management piece.

The solution?

The Innovator’s Mindset, by George Couros…as a book study in a closed Facebook group, that I can schedule using PostCron.

Several friends have done book studies on FB, and speak to the ease of conversations, of the simplicity in posting images with questions, and the management piece.

I created question images using Canva and have scheduled them to post using postcron. They’ll post on Mondays, early, so that as teachers read they can come back and reflect on the questions. On Wednesday, I’ll post a video or blog post that goes along with the chapter as well for further thought.

FB schedule

Luckily. George has provided all of these resources for me on his website. It doesn’t get much easier than that!

I’ll keep you posted on how effortless, and yet impactful, this book study truly is!

Mindset ready,

Amber

Purpose & Positivity, part 2

January 3, 2016 by Amber Leave a Comment

I shared these paragraphs with my staff in their weekly “Get Whitt it!” today…(See my other weeks here.)

A blank calendar. A fresh start.

It’s the perfect time to evaluate where you’ve been, where you’re at, and where you’re going. It’s a time for us to bring back that September enthusiasm, relentless joy, and excitement for what we get to do as Whitt Wolves.

This month, I encourage you to look at what’s worked, what hasn’t, and what your heart truly desires in this moment. Maybe you’ve been skimping on self-care and establishing a new routine that encourages you to think of you is what you need. Maybe you’ve been so wrapped up in work that you’ve forgotten how important what you do really is. Call a friend you haven’t checked in on in a while. Evaluate what you’ve accomplished this year so far, and how you want to feel by the time the clock strikes the end of this school year in June.

There will be challenges in the coming months, of course, and the stress of this semester will bring all kinds of highs and lows. But if we shift our perspective to refocus our minds, refresh our hearts, and renew our commitments, there’s no telling what kind of miracles the rest of this year has in store. Pick out your outfit, grab your backpack, and let’s get take this semester’s journey together. That’s what our Wednesday staff meetings are going to focus on…purpose & positivity.

I have plans for a staff meeting, just 30 minutes long, each Wednesday in January. Here are the plans thus far, and I will edit this as the month progresses. Keeping that p & p focus this month is my focus. Spring in Texas is pretty much about as stressful as it gets. You have all the normal school stress, no long breaks, and our state testing. While my campus has done well in the past couple of years,

our focus is not on being “successful” but proving “mastery”.

We want to maintain the standard we have here, not just reach it every so often.

May your January be as purposeful and just as positive!

Who doesn’t need additional support? #ASCD has you covered!

November 20, 2015 by Amber Leave a Comment

Last week, ASCD launched a brand new product for teachers, ASCD myTeachSource. This is a digital subscription product where teachers can access tools and content they need on key topics, such as formative assessment and classroom management. It’s priced at just $29 per year and is designed completely with the needs of teachers in mind. (members ALREADY have access to it!)

Now, I am a self-admitted ASCD junkie, given the amount of their books/authors I depend on to meet my own professional development needs. But this? This is for my people!

My highlights:

  • Articles on a PLETHORA of topics. This week alone I could share 3 different articles on formative assessment. A very timely topic, this provided background, practicality, and easy applications for my teachers. From the articles section, you can also connect with videos, tools, and additional links on the topic!
  • Videos: What better catalyst to a PLC than a short video? The focused in on best practices, no fluff, so I could get right to the good stuff. (LOVED the one on “relationship building exercises”.
  •  Tools: As a principal, again, this are SO valuable for quick and easy support with my team! I can send these out for team leaders to lead a conversation on, or I can use them for coaching with those might need a lil’support. A time saver for me, but a HUGE resource for them!
  • Links: Now, you can google just about anything you want these days, but knowing that ASCD has cultivated these resources, that align with their “whole child” vision, & that have been vetted by their team, just makes me so much comfortable utilizing them!

Check it out!

All about that support,

Connected Educator Month, 2015 #CEM15

October 1, 2015 by Amber 1 Comment

Even though it looks different for each learner, being a connected educator simply means leveraging technology to expand one’s personal learning network. Doing so not only provides you with a network of like-minded people, but also inspires you to try new activities and strategies to create the most effective learning environment for your students.

No one has time to be alone on their educator island!

Jump in this month and try something new!

There is a calendar through ASCD & the USDOE and  that gives a multitude of activities that you can partake in.  From tweeting to blogging to an online book club, there’s an activity for every type of learner. Defining what being what a connected educator looks like for you is step one!

I know right now, at this point in your year you’re thinking nuh uh, I can’t handle ANYTHING else. Trust me, we get that. These activities were intentionally easy,  applicable, and designed to help get you CONNECTED…which in turn should make your life easier.

Angela Watson, from The Cornerstone for Teachers, who is just a little slice of heaven, puts it like this “Has teaching gotten a little monotonous? Are your students driving you nuts? Are you bogged down by all the demands of teaching and losing sight of the big picture? Do you often dread or feel ambivalent about going to work each day? If the answer to any of those questions is YES, then becoming a connected educator is necessary.”

But wait, Amber, how does this all translate to helping students learn?

Educators are models of learning for kids.

As educators’ learning shifts from the “sit and get” model to the collaboration model, that shift hopefully transfers to their teaching as well. If an educator controls his or her learning through self-direction, that learning becomes more meaningful. Authentic self-directed learning becomes self-motivating. That does more than translate to a better-educated educator — it also creates a teacher advocate for collaborative learning. AND that, quite simply, is where we are going! It’s easier  to differentiate, assess, and KNOW our students using this form of pedagogy, vs again, that traditional sit & get model. 3

We’re challenging our teachers to complete a “connected bingo” this month, knowing that if do  they’ll have changed the dynamics of their classroom, and the mindsets of their teaching!

Connectedly,

Amber

Be more you!

June 4, 2015 by Amber 4 Comments

Advice is easy to give. It’s usually given with the greatest of intentions. Sometimes it can be questionable…but this isn’t that kinda post! 🙂

tumblr_m59r9w1arl1rwtnkmo1_500

Our superintendent, Dr. Vinson, gave a closing speech at a banquet a couple of weeks ago where he reflected on the things people told him when he came to this district. Things like “We’re almost as big as such & such district, our scores are as good as so & so’s district.”, and how that gave him pause. He decided that he didn’t want to be more like those places…he just wanted us to be more Wylie. 5 years later we’re an anomaly in the state when it comes to testing data and you have people lined up to get hired. We’re proud of who we are are, and the Wylie Way defines our priorities. The good test scores are a byproduct of the phenomenal educators we have here.

That comment of his reminded me of a conversation we had at the beginning of the year. He mentioned in passing that he wanted to learn more about Twitter, that he’d heard I was a “pro”, and I shrugged him off (as gracefully as one can shrug off your big new boss!!) and said oh, I’m trying to get away from being “that” technology girl, but sure. His response was “Why? Be who you are,Teamann, you gotta own that…”

That stuck in my mind and after completing my 13th year in education, being named principal next year, and finding out I was named a 2015 ASCD Emergent Leader…I can say that advice was heart affirming.

I’m in a place that wants me to be more ME.

Not who they think I should be, but more of the me I am.

Our students are encouraged to embrace their individual gifts and we highlight their strengths…don’t forget as an adult you should do the same thing.

I hope that you are in a place where you can embrace who you are, and and are appreciated for the strengths you bring. Every team member plays a role, but the strongest teams balance each others gifts. Never deny your strengths. Find a place where they can SHINE!!

celebrating YOU,

Amber
